Sudanese civilians have called on the international community to increase efforts to end the country’s war.
The appeal focuses on a ceasefire, civilian protection, humanitarian access and a broader political process.
In a statement marking the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sudanese men and women from the country’s central region said civilians had paid a heavy price during the conflict.
They highlighted the situation facing displaced people and refugees in particular.
Call for ceasefire and humanitarian access
The signatories urged international actors to increase pressure for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities.
They also called for safe and sustained humanitarian routes so aid can reach communities in need.
Sudan’s war has created a major displacement and humanitarian crisis, leaving millions of people dependent on assistance.
The statement did not focus its appeal on one of the warring parties. Instead, it called for international efforts aimed at ending the conflict and protecting civilians.
Independent investigations urged
The Sudanese signatories also called for support for independent investigations into abuses committed during the conflict.
They urged action against hate speech, incitement and disinformation.
Their statement argued that accountability should form part of efforts to establish lasting peace in Sudan.
Civilians seek role in political process
The group said any future political process should include a broad range of Sudanese voices.
Women, young people, displaced communities and refugees should be represented, according to the statement.
It also called for participation from Sudan’s different regions and social groups.
The signatories said displaced Sudanese and refugees should have a meaningful role in peace efforts rather than being treated only as recipients of humanitarian assistance.
Appeal for inclusive peace
The statement described Sudan’s crisis as both political and humanitarian.
It therefore urged international actors to address the causes of the conflict alongside immediate humanitarian needs.
The signatories expressed support for a civilian and democratic Sudan based on the rule of law, equal citizenship, human rights and public freedoms.
They concluded by calling for conditions that would allow Sudanese people to return safely to their communities.
They said a lasting peace should be based on justice, accountability and participation by Sudanese society.
