Tanzania probes death of US influencer in Zanzibar

Tanzanian police are investigating the death of a U.S. social media influencer who died in hospital days after an alleged suicide attempt while on holiday in Zanzibar, authorities said.

The woman, identified as 31-year-old Ashly Robinson, also known online as Ashlee Jenae, had travelled to the semi-autonomous island with her fiancé, Joseph Isaac McCann, 45, also a U.S. national.

Police said the couple arrived on April 4 and initially checked into one hotel before moving to another, where staff reported signs of domestic disputes. Hotel management later placed the pair in separate rooms.

According to a police statement, Robinson was found after allegedly attempting to hang herself using a belt tied inside a wardrobe in her room. She was taken to hospital, where she died on April 9 at around 9 p.m. local time.

Authorities said McCann is being questioned as part of the investigation and that his passport has been seized. He has not been charged.

“Investigations are ongoing, pending medical reports and forensic examinations,” police said.

Reuters could not immediately reach McCann’s legal representative for comment.
