Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, Tanzania’s incoming WHO Africa director, has passed away at 55. Elected in August, he was set to assume the role in February 2024, succeeding Botswana’s Dr. Matshidiso Moeti.
Dr. Ndugulile, a medical doctor and former Tanzanian MP, died Wednesday in India while receiving treatment, though the illness remains undisclosed. Known for his stance against COVID-19 skepticism under former President John Magufuli, he served as deputy health minister before being dismissed in 2020.
WHO’s Tedros Ghebreyesus and President Samia Suluhu expressed condolences, hailing his contributions to public health and politics, including his role in establishing Tanzania’s National Blood Transfusion Service.
Dr. Ndugulile’s death marks the first time a WHO regional director-elect has passed before taking office.
