Ugandan court sentences man to death for killing four school kids

A Ugandan court has sentenced a man to death for killing four children at a nursery school in Kampala.

The April 2 attack saw 39-year-old Christopher Okello Onyum stab four toddlers aged two and three years, police said.

A security guard subdued the attacker, while angry parents attempted to lynch him before police detained him at scene.

Investigators found phone and laptop searches including ‘schools near me’ and ‘ISIS beheading’, which the judge cited in ruling.

Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha said the searches showed preparation, concluding the brutal attack was carefully planned within seven minutes span.

Onyum pleaded not guilty, with defence lawyers arguing mental instability and prior psychiatric hospitalisation should exempt him from conviction charges.

The judge rejected insanity claims, noting the defendant laughed in court, and ruled he was fully responsible for actions his.

Uganda still enforces death penalty for murder, though the last execution occurred roughly two decades ago in practice overall context.
