UN calls for ceasefire amidst deadly Sudan clashes

The United Nations voiced its concern on Sunday over the ongoing clashes in North Darfur between Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), highlighting the critical situation faced by civilians in the region.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm over the escalating conflict in El Fasher, North Darfur, where intense fighting has been reported among two rival armed factions.

“These clashes are having severe impacts on the civilian population,” stated Farhan Haq, a UN spokesman, emphasizing the dire consequences for those caught in the crossfire and the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Haq warned that the fighting would worsen humanitarian needs around El Fasher, especially amid famine conditions confirmed in Zamzam camp, likely affecting other displaced sites in the region.

Guterres urged all parties to honor international humanitarian law by protecting civilians, ensuring their safe passage, and allowing unhindered humanitarian access, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and dialogue.
