UN sounds alarm on Sudan’s looming famine

A senior UN official has issued a dire warning about the escalating crisis in Sudan.

Ted Chaiban, deputy head of UNICEF, described the situation as “one of the most acute crises in living memory,” with millions displaced and facing severe food insecurity.

The ongoing war between Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated the country, leading to widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and a humanitarian catastrophe.

The conflict has also triggered a surge in violence, including reports of mass killings, rape, and looting.

Despite the immense suffering, Sudan has been overshadowed by other global crises, particularly the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Chaiban urged the international community to prioritize Sudan and provide urgent humanitarian aid.

The UN official emphasized the need for unimpeded access to affected areas and called for increased support to address the complex challenges facing the Sudanese people.

As the crisis deepens, the world must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of millions.
