UN warns of regional catastrophe as violence escalates in Sudan

The leading United Nations humanitarian representative on Friday expressed worry regarding the escalation of violence in Sudan, emphasizing that a prolonged conflict could push the entire region into a dire “humanitarian catastrophe.”

“This viral conflict and the hunger, disease and displacement left in its wake now threatens to consume the entire country,” stated Martin Griffiths in a press release sent to reporters on Friday, mentioning various concerns about the well-being of civilians in Sudan’s vital Gezira State, often referred to as the country’s breadbasket.

“Hundreds of thousands of children are severely malnourished and at imminent risk of death if left untreated,” he added.
