White rhinos return to Tanzania after decades of absence

Tanzania received 18 white rhinos from South Africa, marking a significant step in its efforts to revitalize its wildlife and tourism sectors.

This transfer is part of a larger project aiming to reintroduce 36 white rhinos, a species lost to poaching in Tanzania during the 1970s.

The rhinos will initially acclimate in an enclosure before being released into the Ngorongoro crater.

The reintroduction aims to replenish Tanzania’s rhino population, which has seen a dramatic decline, particularly among black rhinos.

South Africa, home to the majority of the world’s white rhinos, is aiding this conservation effort amid its own poaching crisis.

More than 10,000 rhinos have been lost in South Africa since 2007.

The relocation to Tanzania, along with other countries, is intended to safeguard these endangered animals.

South African community leaders emphasized the successful increase of their white rhino population through conservation efforts, despite ongoing threats.
