Zambia: EX-President Lungu accuses Hichilema of plotting his arrest

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu alleges that President Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambia Police Inspector General are planning his unjustified arrest and detention.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Lungu claimed that the police intend to arrest him unexpectedly during the night from his residence in Lusaka.

“…the police are under instructions to arrest me in the dark of the night any day by surprise!” read the post. This comes after Lungu’s controversial suggestion of a possible change in government before the 2026 elections, perceived by many as a threat. His statement has faced criticism from political opponents and civil society organizations.

Police Chief Graphael Musamba stated that Lungu will be called to clarify his “incendiary” remarks. Local media report that the police are treating Lungu’s statement seriously and are conducting an investigation.

Lungu’s allegations of house arrest and police intimidation have raised concerns about democracy and human rights in Zambia. Lungu, a vocal critic of President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, claims to be a victim of persecution.

The Patriotic Front, Lungu’s party, accuses the government of silencing dissent and demands the release of Lungu and detained party members.

After losing the presidency to Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu retired from politics. However, he continues to accuse the government of targeting him and his Patriotic Front (PF) party to prevent his return to politics.

His wife, former First Lady Esther Lungu, faces corruption allegations related to cases of motor vehicle theft and property deeds. She denies the accusations.

Human rights organizations have called for restraint and urged the government to uphold Lungu’s rights, including freedom of expression.

The situation is being monitored by regional and international observers concerned about potential political instability. Zambia has a history of peaceful power transitions, and many hope this will continue.
