Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers, has purchased several hundred thousand metric tons of wheat in recent weeks.
Traders and industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday the shipments are scheduled for delivery in July and August.
The precise volume remains uncertain, though estimates range widely between 300,000 and one million tons.
Purchases had declined sharply earlier this year following heavy imports in the latter half of 2024.
One source reported sales between 300,000 and 400,000 tons, while another suggested state buyers were seeking 600,000 tons.
A third source said combined sales from state and private buyers may reach up to one million tons.
The wheat is expected to originate from Russia, Ukraine and Romania, according to traders familiar with the deals.
Reported prices vary between \$250 and \$258 per ton, inclusive of cost and freight.
Last week, Egypt’s state buyer confirmed to Reuters that it was negotiating additional supplies from European Union countries.
However, officials have yet to disclose the specific EU nations involved in the talks.
