First gas flows from BP’s GTA project in Senegal and Mauritania

On January 1, 2025, Senegal and Mauritania proudly announced the production of their first gas from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project. Developed by BP and its partners, the offshore gas field marks a significant milestone for both nations.

The GTA project, located on a floating facility spanning the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania, is set to transform the energy landscape. In its first phase, it will produce 2.3 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.

Energy ministries from both countries hailed the opening of the first well as a monumental step toward gas commercialization. They confirmed that gas commercialization is expected to begin shortly.

BP, in collaboration with U.S.-listed Kosmo Energy, is spearheading the GTA development. This project also marks Senegal’s inaugural LNG venture, further solidifying the region’s growing energy potential.

The GTA project holds great promise for both nations, enhancing their energy security and boosting economic growth. With this first gas production, Senegal and Mauritania are poised to become key players in the global LNG market.
