Italy and Libya sign deals to boost cooperation

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Libya on Tuesday, signing several agreements with Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah to boost cooperation between the two Mediterranean nations.

The agreements cover a range of sectors, including development, investment, infrastructure, health, trade, and transportation.

One significant development is the resumption of the coastal highway mega-project, a massive infrastructure undertaking.

Italy aims to support Libya’s economic recovery and sustainability, especially as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of the 2011 civil war.

The Italian government is also keen to reduce irregular migration from Africa, a pressing issue for both nations.

The “Mattei Plan” for Africa, named after the Italian energy company founder, is a key part of Italy’s strategy to foster cooperation with African countries.

This plan focuses on investments in areas like energy, agriculture, water, health, and education.

By strengthening ties with Libya, Italy hopes to contribute to the country’s stability and economic development, while also addressing the challenges of migration and security in the region.
