MTN South Africa launches affordable 5G phone

MTN South Africa has introduced the MTN Icon 5G, a 5G-enabled smartphone priced at a budget-friendly 2,499 rand ($138).

This move aligns with the company’s goal of expanding mobile internet access and transitioning customers from older 2G and 3G networks.

Despite significant growth in mobile internet penetration, a substantial digital divide persists in South Africa, primarily due to affordability issues.

The MTN Icon 5G aims to bridge this gap by offering a cost-effective entry point to 5G technology, with its faster speeds, lower latency, and enhanced user experiences.

Manufactured by Chinese tech giant ZTE, the smartphone is also available on a 36-month contract starting from 219 rand per month.

MTN South Africa, the country’s second-largest mobile operator, views this launch as a pivotal step in accelerating the migration of customers from legacy networks to modern 4G and 5G technologies.

Thando Gabela, General Manager for Devices at MTN South Africa, emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring accessible and affordable mobile communication for all South Africans, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
