Cairo moves to bridge Israel-Hamas gaps with new truce proposal

Egypt has submitted a fresh ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposal to both Israel and Hamas, Israeli media reported Friday.

The initiative, delivered within the past 24 hours, seeks to reconcile persistent differences between the two sides, according to public broadcaster KAN.

Though the proposal’s full details remain undisclosed, KAN suggested it lies between previous offers from Egypt and Qatar, and a counteroffer from Israel.

The earlier mediators’ plan proposed the release of five Israeli hostages, while Israel insisted on the release of 11.

Egypt has not issued an official comment on the reported proposal or its terms.

Israeli authorities estimate 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with at least 22 believed to be alive.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in January, the Israeli military launched a surprise aerial offensive on March 18, killing 1,249 Palestinians and injuring over 3,000.

The war, which began in October 2023, has left more than 50,600 Palestinians dead in Gaza—most of them women and children.

International scrutiny has intensified in recent months, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Both are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the ongoing Gaza offensive.

Israel also stands accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice, a case that continues to draw global attention.
