Egypt joins AU peacekeeping force in Somalia

Egypt has agreed to participate in a new African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced today.

This decision comes amidst growing regional tensions, particularly with Ethiopia.

The new force, known as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), will replace the current ATMIS mission, which is set to conclude at the end of the year.

Egypt’s participation in the peacekeeping mission follows a request from the Somali government and the approval of the African Union Peace and Security Council.

This move signifies a strengthening of ties between Egypt and Somalia. The two nations have been working to enhance their strategic partnership, particularly in light of recent tensions with Ethiopia.

The decision to join the AUSSOM mission also underscores Egypt’s commitment to regional stability and its willingness to contribute to peace and security efforts in the Horn of Africa.
