Rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah met in Cairo on Saturday to discuss forming a joint committee to manage the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s ongoing offensive.
An Egyptian official confirmed the meeting, which took place in the Egyptian capital.
According to Egypt’s state-affiliated Al-Qahera News, both groups demonstrated flexibility and a positive stance toward establishing a community support committee.
This proposed committee would manage Gaza’s affairs under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority and include independent figures.
The Egyptian official explained that this initiative aims to prevent separation between the West Bank and Gaza.
The committee’s formation would come through a decree from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
No Palestinian leaders have yet publicly commented on the reported meeting or proposed committee.
Israel’s assault on Gaza continues despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Local health authorities report that the offensive has killed over 43,300 people, primarily women and children, and injured more than 102,000 others.
Severe shortages of food, water, and medicine plague the territory as Israel maintains a blockade.
The conflict has also displaced almost all of Gaza’s population.
The International Court of Justice is currently hearing a genocide case against Israel concerning its actions in Gaza.
