Israeli negotiators return home as ceasefire talks in Cairo continue

Israeli negotiators left Cairo on Friday evening after discussions on the second phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

An Israeli official, speaking anonymously to The Associated Press, confirmed the negotiations would continue Saturday, despite the first phase of the agreement expiring.

Under the deal’s terms, hostilities will not resume while discussions remain ongoing, though it remains uncertain if Israeli representatives will return to Cairo.

Hamas issued a statement on Friday reaffirming its commitment to implementing all stages and details of the agreement without conditions.

The ongoing talks focus on securing the release of hostages in Gaza and ensuring the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory.

However, Israel’s war objectives—centered on dismantling Hamas’ military and governance structures—clash with Hamas’ insistence on retaining its weapons.

Despite suffering significant losses, Hamas remains operational and unwilling to surrender its military capabilities, complicating efforts for a long-term truce.
