Namibian local councillor named Adolf Hitler has been re-elected for a fifth consecutive term, winning his small northern constituency by a landslide, official results showed late Thursday. Adolf Hitler Uunona – who now prefers to be known simply as Adolf Uunona – retained his council seat in Ompundja, in the northern Oshana region, by securing 1,275 votes. His only challenger, Isak Akawa of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), received 148 votes. Uunona, who has no links to the former German dictator despite sharing his name, ran on the ticket of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). He has represented the Ompundja constituency, in what was once a German colony, since 2004. Earlier this week, Uunona said he wanted to be officially addressed as Adolf Uunona going forward. Local media quoted him as saying that his values and ambitions were the opposite of those associated with Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader he says he barely knew about when he was given the name.
