Turkey’s ambassador to Mauritania heads Damascus mission

Turkey has appointed Ambassador Burhan Koroglu, currently serving in Mauritania, as the interim chargé d’affaires at the Turkish Embassy in Damascus.

The appointment, confirmed by Turkish diplomatic sources, marks Koroglu’s new role leading Turkey’s diplomatic mission in Syria’s capital.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan personally informed Koroglu about his temporary reassignment.

Koroglu, who has served as Turkey’s ambassador to Nouakchott, will now oversee the operations of the Turkish Embassy in Damascus.

The Turkish Embassy in Damascus, located near Rida Square, had remained operational even amid the early stages of Syria’s civil conflict in 2011.

However, the embassy ceased its functions on March 26, 2012, as violence escalated, forcing staff and their families to return to Turkey.

During this period, Syria’s Consulate General in Istanbul continued its operations as usual.

This latest development reflects Turkey’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Syria, despite the complex political situation.

Koroglu’s appointment signals a continued commitment to maintaining diplomatic channels in Syria, even under challenging circumstances.
