Turkey’s TIKA launches women’s support centre in Sudan

In the war-scarred heart of Sudan, a new beacon of hope has emerged for displaced and traumatised women.

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) on Thursday inaugurated a “Safe Home” in Port Sudan, aiming to heal wounds left by war and sexual violence.

Part of Türkiye’s “Year of the Family” campaign, the centre offers psychological support and vocational training for women fleeing Khartoum, Gezira, and Sennar.

The initiative is a joint effort with Sudan’s Red Sea State Ministry of Social Development and the Bit Makali National Association.

At the opening ceremony, Red Sea State Governor Mustafa Mohamed Nour praised the centre’s “therapy through work” approach and lauded Türkiye’s steady support.

Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz noted the facility’s dual focus on mental recovery and economic empowerment, calling it a path to social reintegration.

“TIKA has supplied everything from sewing machines to cooking tools, giving women the means to reclaim their independence,” Yildiz said.

He reaffirmed Türkiye’s enduring commitment to Sudan, expressing hope for the nation’s resilience and recovery after the conflict.

TIKA Sudan Coordinator Galip Yilmaz highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts, citing over 750 projects completed across Sudan since 2006.

“This centre is about rebuilding dignity, offering safety, and restoring confidence to the most vulnerable,” Yilmaz stated.

As Sudan’s conflict drags on, the Safe Home stands as a testament to international solidarity and the quiet power of healing.
