Hamas has officially confirmed the death of its military chief, Mohammed Deif, months after Israel claimed to have killed him.
In a statement on Thursday, Hamas’ armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, announced the loss of Deif and other high-ranking commanders.
“The Al-Qassam Brigades announce to our great people the martyrdom of a group of distinguished fighters and heroic commanders,” the statement declared.
Among the slain leaders was Marwan Issa, the deputy chief of staff of the Al-Qassam Brigades, who was also confirmed dead.
Deif had long been a key figure in Hamas, with Israel accusing him of orchestrating the October 7 attack that triggered the ongoing conflict.
His death marks a significant blow to the group’s military leadership, though Hamas has vowed to continue its resistance.
Israeli officials have yet to respond to the latest confirmation, which comes amid continued hostilities in Gaza.
