Palestine eyes BRICS joining after Kazan summit

Palestine is poised to submit its application to join the BRICS group of emerging economies at the upcoming summit in Kazan, Russia, in October.

According to the Palestinian ambassador to Moscow, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, Palestine will formally request membership following its participation in the summit.

The ambassador revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to dedicate a specific session to Palestine during the event.

Earlier this year, President Putin extended an invitation to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to attend the BRICS summit.

The ambassador emphasized that this invitation serves as a testament to Palestine’s desire for peace and development, despite the ongoing challenges and violence in the Gaza Strip.

BRICS, which currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently welcomed Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE as full members.

Russia assumed the presidency of the group on January 1, 2024.
