Pentagon says US, Egypt focus on Red Sea threats by Houthis

The United States and Egypt have engaged in discussions emphasizing the critical importance of security in the Red Sea region.

This dialogue comes as attacks perpetrated by the Houthi group continue to pose a significant threat.

US defense chief Pete Hegseth spoke with his Egyptian counterpart, Gen. Abd-al-Majid Ahmad Saqr, to reinforce their nations’ strong partnership.

During their conversation, the defense leaders exchanged perspectives on the “reckless actions of the Houthis.”

The Pentagon highlighted that these actions have negatively impacted the vital Suez Canal and the broader global economy.

Hegseth had previously stated that the situation for the Houthis has deteriorated significantly and is expected to worsen.

Describing the ongoing military campaign against the Houthis as “devastating,” Hegseth affirmed the US commitment to not relenting in its efforts.

He also directly addressed Iran, urging them to cease providing support to the Houthi militants.

Recent days have witnessed an intensification of US airstrikes on Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen.

These intensified strikes have reportedly resulted in casualties and damage, according to the Houthi group.

The Houthis initiated their campaign of targeting ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023.

Their actions are stated to be in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where Israeli military actions have resulted in a devastating number of casualties.

The current escalation follows threats from the Houthis to resume targeting vessels due to the ongoing restrictions on aid entering Gaza.
