Sisi: Egypt ready to mediate, urges peace amid regional tensions

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced Friday that Cairo is ready to mediate and promote political solutions to the escalating Middle East crisis.

Sisi made the remarks during a phone call from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s “categorical condemnation and complete rejection” of Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf countries, Jordan, and Iraq.

Sisi stressed these nations did not participate in the war against Iran, but supported diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington.

The Egyptian leader urged an immediate halt to attacks, warning the escalation could destabilize the wider region and inflame tensions further.

He emphasized Egypt’s readiness to exert every effort to mediate and prioritise political and diplomatic solutions to the current crisis.

Sisi also underlined the importance of respecting international law, the UN Charter, state sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs.

Pezeshkian reportedly expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in reducing tensions and fostering dialogue between the conflicting parties.

The conflict intensified after Israeli and US strikes on Iran on Feb. 28 killed hundreds, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel, US interests, and several Arab countries, causing casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.

Regional leaders have condemned the Iranian strikes, while Egypt seeks to reinforce principles of good neighbourliness and urgent diplomatic engagement.
