DR Congo prison break leaves 129 dead, reports of rapes

A failed escape attempt from Makala prison, the largest penitentiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in a tragic loss of life. At least 129 people, including 24 who were shot after warnings, have been confirmed dead, according to Interior Minister Jacquemain Sh abani.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, prompting a violent response from security forces. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire for several hours in the area surrounding the prison, which is located in a densely populated neighborhood.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 59 people were wounded and received medical treatment. The minister also revealed that a number of women were raped during the chaos.

The circumstances surrounding the attempted breakout remain unclear. Authorities have not provided details about the number of inmates who attempted to escape or the methods they employed.

The government has blamed the incident on acts of sabotage and has launched an investigation to identify those responsible. Justice Minister Constant Mutamba announced that the perpetrators will face severe punishment.

Makala prison, which has a capacity of 1,500 inmates but houses between 14,000 and 15,000, has been plagued by overcrowding and poor conditions. Rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the treatment of prisoners within its walls.
