A well known Ghanaian social media influencer, Abu Trica, has been arrested over allegations that he ran an elaborate romance scam that defrauded elderly Americans of more than $8m, according to prosecutors. His real name is Frederick Kumi.
Investigators say he used AI generated identities to approach victims on social media and dating platforms, building trust before extracting money under false claims. Prosecutors allege he worked with associates in both Ghana and the US, funnelling the proceeds through a network of accomplices.
Kumi faces charges in the US of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. Ghanaian authorities arrested him following a joint operation with US counterparts, who are now seeking his extradition. He has not yet responded publicly to the accusations.
The 31 year old, also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, frequently showcased luxury cars, cash and high end properties to more than 100,000 Instagram followers, raising questions about the source of his wealth.
Prosecutors said the scheme relied on “frequent, intimate conversations” with victims by phone, email and messaging apps. Scammers allegedly requested money for fabricated medical emergencies, travel costs or investment opportunities, directing the funds to intermediaries posing as third parties. Prosecutors say Kumi then redistributed the money to his network in Ghana and the US.
The case is being brought under the US Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act, which targets schemes that prey on older people. US authorities have stepped up efforts to intercept West African fraud networks involved in romance, inheritance and bank scams.
In July, Ghanaian national Dada Joe Remix was extradited to the US to face charges linked to similar schemes. Earlier this month, a US court sentenced Nigerian fraud organiser Oluwaseun Adekoya to 20 years in prison for laundering over $2m through a nationwide network.
