Missionary pilot Kevin Rideout freed after nine months in Niger

American Christian missionary Kevin Rideout has been reunited with his wife, Krista, after surviving over nine months of captivity in Niger.

Armed men abducted the pilot and SIM International worker outside his home in Niamey before taking him to the Tillaberi region.

Rideout spent more than nine months in the militant-heavy western region before officials finally secured his freedom.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the release on Sunday, announcing that Rideout was preparing to fly home to the United States.

Trump noted that Rideout marks the 110th captive American liberated since the start of his second presidential term.

According to his mission organization, the long-serving pilot remains in good health and is currently under the care of U.S. officials.

Specific details regarding how officials secured his release and the exact identity of his captors currently remain unclear.

Rideout dedicated 19 years to serving as a missionary pilot in Niger for the international Christian organization.
