Dozens rescued, 27 dead in shipwrecks off Tunisian coast

A tragic maritime incident unfolded off the Tunisian coast on Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 27 African migrants.

Two boats carrying migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea sank near the city of Sfax, a notorious departure point for those seeking to reach Europe.

The Tunisian coast guard recovered the bodies of the deceased while rescuing 87 individuals from the same vessels.

This incident follows a string of similar tragedies, with approximately 30 migrants losing their lives in two separate shipwrecks last month.

Tunisia is currently facing a severe migration crisis, having surpassed Libya as the primary point of departure for both Tunisian and African migrants seeking better opportunities in Europe.
