Kenyan police teargas anti-femicide protesters

Kenyan police dispersed a peaceful anti-femicide march in Nairobi with tear gas on Monday, during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Protesters criticized the government’s inaction and accused security forces of complicity. Activist Waithira Karanja stated, “Police, who should protect us, are part of the problem.”

Kenya recorded 97 femicide cases in three months, though activists claim many go unreported. President William Ruto recently condemned the surge in femicides, urging stronger action.

Globally, 85,000 women were intentionally killed in 2023, with Africa reporting the highest rates, according to the UN.
