On International Women’s Day, Turkey’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, highlighted the importance of hygiene access for women.
At an event, Turkey’s state aid agency, TIKA, donated equipment to produce reusable sanitary pads, benefiting young women striving for economic independence.
The donation, including sewing and overlock machines, went to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit supporting women’s empowerment.
Ak praised the initiative as part of the strong development ties between Turkey and Uganda.
“TIKA has completed 94 projects here, impacting many communities,” he said.
Murat Cetin, TIKA’s country coordinator, noted that the equipment would help create job opportunities and improve hygiene awareness.
Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, thanked Turkey and stressed that empowering women is essential for social prosperity.
This donation continues Turkey’s long history of supporting women’s rights, dating back to 1934, when it became one of the first countries to grant women the right to vote.
Reusable sanitary pads offer an affordable alternative to disposable ones, crucial for low-income women in Uganda.
