At least 13 Cambodians — eight civilians and five soldiers — were killed and 71 others wounded after cross‑border shelling with Thailand erupted Thursday and raged into a third day, Cambodia’s Defence Ministry said.
Spokeswoman Maly Socheata told reporters 21 Royal Cambodian Armed Forces personnel and about 50 civilians were injured. Some 35,829 residents fled high‑risk zones in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Pursat provinces.
Thailand reported 15 deaths, including one soldier, and said thousands of its citizens have also been uprooted. Bangkok deployed fighter jets while Phnom Penh fired rockets, with each side blaming the other for triggering the exchange.
The flare‑up centres on a long-disputed stretch of frontier abutting Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani, where tensions have simmered since a Cambodian soldier was killed on May 28.
