Syria’s Sharaa visits UAE in regional diplomacy push

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa embarked on his second trip to a Gulf nation, arriving in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, according to Syria’s state news agency. Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibani joined Sharaa on this significant diplomatic mission.

Discussions on matters of mutual interest are anticipated between the two nations.

This visit follows Sharaa’s inaugural foreign trip to Saudi Arabia in February, marking his efforts to forge new alliances since assuming the presidency in January. His leadership followed the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The new Syrian leadership is actively seeking to bolster relations with both Arab and Western powers.

Abu Dhabi previously voiced concerns regarding extremism in post-Assad Syria.

Western nations are closely monitoring Syria’s leadership, emphasizing the need for an inclusive government, stable institutions, and the prevention of a resurgence by groups like Islamic State.

Sanctions relief is crucial for Syria’s war-torn economy after years of international pressure.
